What is it About?
Christopher Nolan takes on one of the oldest and most famous adventure stories ever told, with Matt Damon starring as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca.
Following the end of the Trojan War, Odysseus (Matt Damon) begins what should be his journey home to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). Unfortunately for him, getting home proves anything but straightforward. What follows is an epic journey across land and sea as Odysseus and his men encounter seemingly impossible challenges, dangerous enemies and forces far beyond their control.
Based on Homer's ancient Greek poem, Nolan brings the legendary story to the big screen with an enormous cast and his usual preference for large-scale practical filmmaking.
My Thoughts:
The Odyssey is a proper, Cinematic Epic - that should be watched in the cinema if you can afford to do so. It’s not the all-out-action film you might think…it’s a lot more of the storytelling and emotions felt by the characters in the background - although there are some really enjoyable action scenes. It’s a 3 hour sit - which I think modern day folk will struggle with, if they wait it out and attempt to watch at home. It’s not epic in the same way as Troy, or Kingdom of Heaven - where a lot of the focus is on the battle-scenes - so make sure you know what to expect before you pay to watch it - it won’t be for everyone. I personally thought it was excellent but I’m glad I paid for the more comfortable VIP seats at our local cinema as both me and the wife were squirming with sore backs in the second half. If you love an epic, appreciate good writing and acting - then you should enjoy it!
