Sisu (2023)

AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

Rated 15

Sisu was a pleasant surprise that I started watching with fairly low expectations.

When I read a bit about Sisu before watching, I thought I was in store for a low-budget, relatively low quality and subtitled movie and I was ok with that. However it exceeded all expectations (and is not all subtitles by the way).

The movie is set in Finland, towards the end of the Second World War - as the Germans are being driven out of the country by the Finns. The Germans have a scorched earth mentality as they retreat - destroying everything they can.

The storyline follows a military Finnish veteran, who seeks a simple, solitary life - after a troubled and violent military past (sounds like just about every Jason Statham movie description here doesn’t it?) and he and his dog are living out a gold prospecting existence in the Hinterland of Finland.

Just as luck strikes, he is faced with a squad of retreating Germans and needless to say, they aren’t friendly - and they dont let him past without trouble. The bad news for them is that the Finn is one bad mofo.

It’s not an epic…but its a level below. It’s simple and entertaining although as with most action movies - a little unbelievable - which you can easily forgive for the entertainment factor. The graphics are very graphic but all-in-all, a very entertaining watch. It’s only 1.5 hours long as well, so doesn’t take up much of your time.

A surprisingly entertaining, action packed and well-earned 7.3/10 from us for Sisu. Think of it as the Finnish Rambo!
