LAST SAMURAI STANDING (2025)
AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX
Rated 15
If I had to quickly set the scene and describe to you what Last Samurai Standing is like - I’d say if you mixed the movie - ‘The Last Samurai’ with the TV show ‘Squid Game’ - that’s what we have here.
It’s set in late 1800’s Japan, where - in the aftermath of what seems to be the final battle, in a war between the traditional Samurai and more Westernised Government forces - we find that the Samurai way of life is very much coming to an end and many are struggling for money in their respective communities - that are plagued with illness.
In the midst of this all, open invitations circulate the country offering skilled warriors (essentially Samurai) the opportunity to enter into a mysterious Battle Royale for the chance to win a massive money prize that they all desperately seek. So we get introduced to our main characters at the opening induction to the ‘game’ and the participants have to battle it out AND cross the country in search of the final prize. Friendships, betrayals, back-stories and side-stories unravel throughout the series and we get that really fun, eccentric characters and manic fight scenes, that has become the norm for Asian shows and movies.
I really enjoyed it from the off but my wife took a couple of episodes to get into it. You can watch it dubbed but I can’t stand dubbed shows and would recommend you watch it in its native tongue and have subtitles on. Would have been our TV Show of the month for November had it not been for the release of Landman Season 2!
Well worth a watch and a bingeable 7.5/10 from us for this one.
