Sandokan: The Pirate Prince (2025)

AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

Rated 15

If (like me) you love a pirate show - then Sandokan could well be the new series to fill the long left void for left by an old favourite of mine - Black Sails, which aired back in 2014-2017.

Sandokan, along with his best friend - Yanez, are renowned pirates in the South East Asia area and they - along with their crew come to blows with the British Fleet and the story unfurls from there.

The show is based in the mid-1800’s, in and around the islands of South-East Asia. The British fleet are a formidable force and we get to understand their relationship with the Sultan of Brunei and his forces. You won’t be surprised to hear that Sandokan falls for an English Lady in the midst of the battling and that adds a further storyline to the show - so it is not just about Pirates on a boat.

We also delve into the tribes of the local islands and further stories unfurl there too.

Think ‘Black Sails’ but with a sprinkling of Bollywood.

It’s a fun, easy, enjoyable watch. There are 8 x 52 minute episodes with plenty of action and there are some more well-known faces such as John Hannah, Owen Teal and Ed Westwick - which gives the show a bit of extra credibility. You’ll quickly like and dislike certain characters - which is down to the good acting.

It’s very bingeworthy and is easy to follow , even if you’re not giving it your full attention. It’s worth a watch and I’m scoring it a fair and not over the top 7.1/10 .
